Spending Eleven Days at Silver Lake

Horsd'oeuvres at Paul-Helen'sSunday morning we drove in the rain from Paynes Prairie to Inverness. Sunday afternoon we spent with our friends Helen & Paul Tempesta and had a great time and wonderful dinner.

We then drove to our nearby campsite at Silver Lake, Cypress Glen- site 47. We love the site since it is right on the lake and has access to the Withlacoochee River & the 46 mile long paved state bike trail. New this year they put in a new 10 mile long paved trail to Brooksville. So this gives us lots of opportunities to Paddle, Bike and hike. Now if it would only get warmer. This has been a cool Fall so far in Florida.

Here is a map of the Trails & River.

Tuesday was cool but sunny so we decided to try the new Good Neighbor Trail that just opened 3 weeks ago. It is a ten foot wide paved trail in the middle of the state forest. We saw a Deer and a Gopher Turtle. We turned around before Brooksville making our round trip ride 19 miles long.

Tuesday afternoon we took our canoe for an easy 4-1/2 mile paddle upstream and back to the Crooked River Camp beach. Lots of turtles, heron, anhinga and a few deer.

Our Last week in Florida

Peggy-John-TandemThe weather in Florida this year has been cool with a  lot of rain, about once a week.

On our last week at Silver Lake we got in 3 more bike rides. Thursday we finished the Good Neighbor Trail all the way to Brooksville, it was a 25 mile ride on a very nice new trail. Peggy loves the tandem because we go twice as fast as she can do on her mountain bike.

John-Peggy-CanoeCartOn Sunday we biked North toward Floral City a 30 mile round-trip ride, but didn’t quite make it, we did 26 miles total.

On Tuesday our friends Helen and Paul drove over to our campground to paddle with us. We love our nice light weight cart that helps us get the canoe from our RV to the launch site without hurting my back.

On  Wednesday we did another 18 mile bike ride to Trilby and back.

Early Thursday morning we drove to the Orlando Airport in a steady rain. We got to the airport and through the TSA lines 1-1/2 hours early, then things went into delay. Our plane was not at the gate since it got diverted to West Palm Beach because of the rain storm. Then all the flights were grounded because of the lightening storm and tornado warnings. Finally after sitting at the gate for 6 hours we finally took off for Cleveland. I thought delays only occurred from snow storms.

This is why we fly home for Christmas time, we have such a beautiful family.

First Week at Lithia Springs

We flew back to Orlando on New Years Eve morning. There were no delays and we picked up our RV at the KOA storage lot near the airport by noon.  After a lot of grocery shopping we got to the campground around 3 PM and got the last campsite, #7, available. I guess this week is a popular camping destination during the holidays.

The campsite was small and not level so on Tuesday morning we found a  site closer to the river, #30, that had just opened up. We took a few bike rides around the FishHawk Ranch trails. See this link for a map. https://bcpoa.org/FHMap.pdf  These paths are 5’ wide concrete sidewalks that mostly go through natural areas around the ponds and woods of this large housing complex. There has to be at least 30 miles of trails along with some mountain bike trails and roadside sidewalks. We biked about 40 miles on 3 rides. The paths are very curvy and slow. There is a large grocery store only 3 miles away which makes it easy to pickup more provisions.

DoorLatchThen my door lock broke. Luckily I was able to push the plunger in and get out of the RV, luckily we also have front doors so we were not trapped inside.

I got on the internet and found that this model lock fails after a few years and a new better designed lock is available. It is still made in the USA but costs about $100.

The Phoenix factory was closed for the holidays so on Wednesday morning I ordered the lock on E-Bay from RV and Auto Parts in CA. I got the lock in 1-1/2 days by USPS, fastest shipment ever. It took a while to put it in because the dead bolt mechanism interferes with the aluminum channel in the door. So after some drilling, filing and Dremel cutting, I got a slot cut in the channel and it works great.

LithiaSpringsSite37-w1

On Friday morning campsite #37, pictured above, opened up so we moved again since it is one of the only 5 sites that are right on the river. We like the river sites because we can get shuttled up to the put-in at Alderman’s Ford and paddle the 9 miles back down to our campsite. A friendly camper from MN, camped next to us, had a rack on his car and carried our canoe and us up to the put-in.

On 12/20 they got 7” of rain in the area and the river came up 10‘ almost flooding out these sites. The river was now back down to 500 cfs from the flood at 3500 cfs but we found it was totally blocked by large trees in two places. Peggy did not like portaging through the muddy jungle. It took us almost an hour more than it usually tales us. We were the only boat on the river that Saturday afternoon. It was nice and fast with no shallow shoals like in low water.

Our plans are to stay here until January 20th and then see if we can get a campsite at another Hillsborough County Park called EG Simmons.

I almost forgot to mention, finally we have really warm weather. See actual weather:

Second Week at Lithia Springs

We are still waiting for the park to clear the two log jams out of the Alafia River. Peggy didn’t want to paddle again and portage through the mud. They are promising now they will have it clear by this coming Wednesday, so we hope to paddle it on Thursday if we can get somebody to shuttle us with our canoe back up to Alderman Ford.

So we biked the Fish Hawk Ranch trails for 4 more days, covering another 50 miles. We have tried to follow all the different bike trails that go through the natural areas of the large housing development. Fish Hawk is in Hillsborough County a suburb of Tampa with a population of 18,000. The average home cost is $350K. Many of the individual developments are gated communities, but we sneak in behind cars or on bike paths.

The trails are 5’ wide concrete sidewalks. There are lots of curves, hills and valleys which keep our average speed below 9 MPH. Except for the weekends not many people use the trails.

We have one more week here and then we plan to try to get a campsite on Tampa Bay at another Hillsborough County Park, E.G. Simmons. It is always full and it may be buggy, but we will give it a try early on Sunday 1/20.

Last Week at Lithia Springs

Our last week was a much cooler week. On Sunday the toilet water flush was leaking slightly since the blade flush valve was sticking slightly on the rubber seal. I had bought a new rubber seal a few years ago but I was not sure how to install it. Since Monday was a shopping and laundry day for us and we would be driving our RV up to Valrico. I looked to see how much further to a  Camping World.. It was only another 4 miles, so I called them, they said the seal and blade both have to be changed since the seals get hard and the blade rough. They said toilets were inexpensive and easy to install so I should just buy a new one but the cost added up to $275 with installation & tax. I decided not to do that. There is no shutoff valve for the fixture like at home so I bought one at Lowes, and it was easy to install. That way I can a least shut off the water if it is sticking on.

On our way back to camp we stopped and had a nice dinner at an authentic Mexican Restaurant, Lavilla, just 2 miles from camp. They now have doubled the size from last year so they must be doing well.

This was our last week at Lithia Springs but the weather turned colder. We took another 11 mile bike ride around the Fish Hawk Ranch trails. Our bike trips for the three weeks totaled 100 miles.

They were supposed to remove the log jams from the river on Wednesday. We checked on Thursday and they assured us that it was clear. I needed to figure out how to get our canoe and us up to the  Alderman’s Ford put-in. I talked the head ranger into throwing the canoe into his equipment trainer and taking the canoe up there. But he said no passengers were allowed so the campground host, Chris, offered to ride Peggy and me up there in his jeep. They really went out of there way to provide us another day on the river. The river had dropped to 250 cfs, but that is still a very nice level.

Friday was a nice warm day on the river and we saw lots of turtles and birds but when we got to the first log jam we found that the narrow path they cleared was choked with more branches that had floated from upstream. I tried for 30 minutes to open it up but when we tried to paddle our canoe through it was about 4” too narrow. So we had to do another portage. That was the only place we were obstructed.

RVToilet2Now back to the toilet story. I watched an on-line video about how to install a new seal, it looked really simple as the toilet top comes off by just removing two bolts and the base remains in place. I gave it a try, it was easy but I had the wrong rubber seal and the blade was rough so the valve was still sticking. Looking further into it I found a kit on-line for about $28 but didn’t know where to ship it, since we were leaving on Sunday. I went back to plan A, why not just order the toilet from Wal-Mart and then pick it up on our way to our new camping spot on Sunday. Free shipping to the store and it will be there when we pass by for about $160.

We were headed to another Hillsborough County Park called E.G. Simmons early on Sunday morning. We figured Sunday morning was the time most local campers leave but this was a MLK Monday holiday weekend and it may push things back to Monday morning. After picking up the toilet and shopping we arrived at camp about 9:30 AM.

EGSimmonsMapWe were #5 on their waiting list but they no longer have overflow campsites that we could stay in until a site becomes available. The check-out time is noon and there were 7 campers that may be leaving so we decided to wait and hope that the cooler day may convince them not to renew. While we were waiting I installed the new toilet in about 10 minutes. This place is popular since it is right on Tampa Bay and most of the campsites are on the water. We took a bike ride through both camp grounds, each with about 50 sites.  We saw a small motor home leave from site 25, and we liked the location on the water channel and the park road and hoped we could get it. We did get it and the weather is supposed to get warmer for a few days. Since we have been back in FL the only rain was last Saturday night while we were sleeping We spent the rest of the cool day Sunday watching the NFL football playoffs. We will stay here a least one week and possibly two. We can ride our bike to see the Manatees by the power plant outflow.

Manatee Viewing

All the local tours and tourists visit the Manatee viewing area near the Apollo Beach power station. Even though it was a windy day we decided to ride our tandem from our campground a 17 mile roundtrip ride, mostly on sidewalks or safe bike lanes. It took us about 45 minutes in both directions.

So I suggested that we bike over to the little restaurant that we discovered last year that puts on great fish dinners. It is casual outdoor dining at a place that looks like an old ice cream stand. It rates as the best seafood restaurant in the area and is only a 3 mile bicycle ride away.

We got there at 4 PM to beat the crowds and also to get back to camp before it got dark.

Another Week at E.G. Simmons

My last blog was posted on Wed 1/23 which was our last warm day until Fri 2/01. In addition every day was very windy so it would be no fun to try canoeing out in Tampa Bay or taking long bike rides.

So we decided to relax here and enjoy not being home dealing with the Polar Vortex.

For a break we took our RV on a shopping trip to Sun City Center, which is only 9 miles away. This is an old Dell Webb. 55 years old and up, community where everybody drives golf carts like in the Villages. The traffic was terrible but we got to Aldi, Walmart, Walgreens, Home Depot and Belles. We were happy to be back in camp and out of the congested area.

When you are out in the bay you can see the power plan that we rode our bikes to, last week. It looks so close but a long time ago we tried to paddle over to it and found out that we took all day to paddle there and back and never did see any Manatees.

Our Friday’s 4 mile paddle is shown in Red. We paddled down the bay on Saturday, it was not as interesting and there was a lot of boat traffic out on the bay. It was about a 3.5 mile, 1-1/2 hour paddle. It was sunny & hot.

It looks like the cold spell is over and we plan to leave after the Super Bowl on Monday morning 2/04.  We will head inland and south to try to get a campsite at Pioneer Park It is a county park, on the Peace River in Zolfo Springs. On 02/07 we have reservations for two weeks at W.P. Franklin, Corps of Engineers campground, by a lock and on an island in the Caloosahatchee River near Ft. Myers, FL It looks like the weather will be in the 80’s when we get there.

Hot weather finally comes to Florida

After two weeks of cool weather everything changed. The highs for the next two weeks are forecast to be in the low 80’s.

We left our Tampa Bay campground on Monday morning and headed to a Pioneer Park, a county park campground, on the Florida Cracker Trail. We came here because it is on the Peace River, a popular canoe trail, that flows south from near Winter Haven down the center of the state to Port Charlotte. During the dry season it has all sorts of shallow limestone shoals and sand bars. However the heavy rains about a week ago brought the river way up so we had 1000 CFS at our campground in Zolfo Springs.

With the high water we wanted to do at least an 8 or 9 mile trip and there is only one outfitter and only runs shorter sections, and wanted $30 to do a special shuttle to take us up to Paynes Creek. This would be a 11 mile paddle.

1VulturesRoostEach nite hundreds of vultures would nest for the night in the big trees. This is about 1/5 th of the group we saw.

We were really disappointed with this campground which was just a big field with all the campers right on top of each other but they had 50 amp electric & water hookups. They have a nice primitive campground right along the river with lots of shade but Peggy likes to have power.

One good thing was that the RV right behind us was from Ohio and they offered to shuttle our canoe and us upstream to Paynes Creek State Park on Tuesday morning, using the rack on their Subaru Outback.

It was a easy shuttle up the state highway to a highway put-in next to the park.

He took this picture when we launched.

2Peace_Canoe

The current was fast and even with a stop for lunch at a wayside park near Wauchula, it only took us 3 hours. We saw at least 12 alligators basking along the banks on this sunny day. At this level there were no shallow spots, just a few trees here and there to avoid.3PeaceRiverGator

4PeaceRiverWauchulaRoadsidePark

Peggy at our lunch stop. There was nobody else on the river. The section from Paynes Creek to this wayside park in Wauchula was very remote and pretty, after this point there were many homes along the way to the take-out in our campground.

5PioneerCampground

We brought our lightweight canoe cart with us so we could pull our canoe back  to our campsite you can see in the distance.

6CrackerPostOffice

Adjacent to the campground is a nice museum and a series of old FL buildings.

Known as the Florida Cracker Museum, it has stories and artifacts about the original settlers called crackers. They say the name was from the crack of their buggy whips. Each year during the last few weeks in February a big festival is held here.WPFranklin_Site#7

TandemOnJohn

We got to one of our favorite, but hard to get in without reservations, campgrounds which is on an island next to the Franklin Lock in the big cross Florida river called the Caloosahatchee.

2EaglesatFranklinWe  got site 7 which has a beautiful view of the river and big tree that often has Bald Eagles looking for fish.

On Friday morning we took the nice paddle one mile downstream and then up Telegraph Creek for two miles which is a tiny creek that passes through a small neighborhood and then into a wilderness setting. There are lots of trees across the river but it can be navigated with no portages. Hover it was much more work then our 11 mile float down the Peace River.

Warm weather returned,. We got in two nice bike rides and a paddle up the Caloosahatchee and then up Hickey Creek past the park area since the river had more water from Wednesday’s 1” rain. There was not much wildlife except for a few turtles. But it is a worthwhile scenic paddle.

The cool thing was three more Phoenix RV’s showed up with old friends, that we had camped last year at the same campground with Barry & Sue from MI and Fred and Joan from VA but the big surprise was Bud & Pat from the Cleveland area. It turns out they came to our home 3 years ago to see our RV to see if they liked our choice and bought the same model.
