Two weeks almost gone, two weeks until we fly out for the Christmas Holidays. We have had pleasant weather here all week, not too hot, not too cool and a few rain drops here and there. We miss our 4 kids their spouses and our 12 grandkids, hopefully we will see them all at our big Christmas party back home near Cleveland, Ohio.

Last Friday we made our first visit to Pizza Leo’s. Our RV friends Robb & Percilla from Manitoba were kind enough to drive us there. Of course we got the Extra Grande Leo, so I have pizza for lunch all week.

We decided to go to Playa del Carmen for the day on Wednesday. Maybe we could find something for daughter Joan’s Feliz Navidad party. We jumped on a Collectivo, a big van that runs from Playa to Tulum and back about every 10 minutes for about 30 pesos per person.

The street that runs closest to the beach in Playa is called 5th avenue. It’s a walking street and it goes on for at least 30 blocks. When we took our beach walk this morning the water was as calm as I’ve seen it and there was hardly a cloud in the sky.

I decided to take a picture showing the other side of our campsite next to the huge Impatiens planted by Sigrid our German neighbor. She stays here year round and doesn’t mind the summer heat. I changed the header picture to show the palms on the right side of our new motorhome.

The beaches at Puerto Adventuras are not near as nice as the beautiful white sand beaches of Xpu-Ha. You can walk on our white sand beach and the sand feels cool even in the heat of the day.

It’s about a 3 mi paddle one way and it’s a fun place to visit. They must have hundreds on Condos, time-shares and 5 hotels, so it is a big place. They run fishing, sailing & snorkel trips.

They let tourists swim with their Sea Lions, Manatees, Nurse Sharks and Dolphins. It seems well run and they are not abusing the animals.

I thought I would try the video on my camera to see how it works. This is the first video post that I tried to post. The video is a little short I guess.

 

We have been coming to Mexico for many years but during the winter months we have never really had a severe thunder & lighting storm. Last night was an exception.

 

The weather took a turn yesterday morning and really got hot & humid. Many of the campers were running their A/C. We just used our fans as we normally get a good breeze off the water. We got a few sprinkles during the day and wouldn’t you know it, it rained during our Happy Hour. So we all huddled under our new big awning.

I didn’t take any happy hour pictures yet, so I thought I would post a picture of Claude & Mags from last year. They didn’t come to Mexico this year and we miss them both.

It stayed very humid and at midnight it started to rain. I could see lightening flashes in the distance but no thunder. Then out of the southwest the storm approached with very loud thunder and a really heavy rain storm. Our new awning worked OK, dumping the water off as it filled and since it wasn’t really windy I left it down to keep our patio mat and chairs dry. We had to close up everything tight but it cooled enough that we slept soundly until morning.

It was still humid in the morning. Most of the women campers are heading off to Playa on a shopping trip.  From Brenda’s photo that I stole from her Blog it’s looks like it was more Happy Hour and less shopping.

Peggy & I are riding with Dierck to take some clothes to the laundry and do some food shopping. It seemed like we stopped at every grocery store in Playa. It was sort of looking like rain all day but all we got was a few brief showers.

I heard from Elaine & Reed. They left today from San Miguel de Allende on Wednesday morning and plan to arrive here on Saturday. This should work out good since Stefan & Nicole move off of their camp site and move their big 5th wheel to a storage area until next March when they expect to return from Austria.

Another two German campers arrived today, I heard they were travelling from Alaska to Patagonia. The one is a large unusual rig. Their friends have a small SUV type camper.

They are only staying a few days.

I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday. We fly out of Cancun tomorrow at noon, we go through customs in Chicago, one of the world’s busiest airports. We hope to be home by 9 PM. Our return flight back to MX is direct from Cleveland to Cancun on the 30th, it should be much easier. Our German friend Dierck will take us to Playa del Carmen Thursday morning to catch the airport bus which takes about an hour and cost only $10/person. It’s much easier than driving. It’s a first class bus and a pleasant drive. They leave every 45 minutes, so we never make reservations. If we miss one, we leave plenty of time to catch the next bus.

We had about 5 minutes of rain yesterday and it has been very hot. Several of the campers are now running their A/C. We just run our fans.

 

We will miss our walk on the beach where we watch the Pelicans dive for fish every morning.

They brought all their toys with them Surf Boards, Stand on Tops, Kite Surfers and best of all 4 of them were white water paddlers. These were the first WW paddlers that I ran into on the beaches of MX. Greg Mallory gave me a Discovery Channel video from 6 years ago when he safety boated for a group doing the first decent of a river in Bhutan, a small Buddhist country near India.

Weather has been warm and windy and the tides have been high for the whole week. It has slowed down my kayaking although I did mange a few surfing days.

Last  year when Claude and Mags were here they generously provided us with free transportation everywhere. We went to get bottled water, take and pick-up laundry, go grocery shopping, go out for dinner.

This year there are not a lot of cars to haul around everyone in our campground. So we get rides here and there, friends offer to drop off laundry or pick up some groceries. But we only made it out one time to eat at Pizza Leos, our old favorite Friday night out in Chemuyil, a small friendly town about 8 mi away.

A few days ago we needed to do some serious shopping for some meat and fish, so we hitched a ride to Playa with Sigrid. She dropped us off and was spending her day visiting the immigration office as well as shopping.

We shopped at two grocery stores, jumped onto a collectivo to get to Sam’s Club and another big grocery chain, Soriano, We took another short ride back to catch the Playa – Tulum, collectivo to get us back to Xpu-Ha. There is about a half mile walk from the highway back to our camper and believe it or not Sigrid was pulling in the driveway and we got to ride back to camp with her. We bought enough main course provisions to last use for three weeks.

This Friday, Elaine lent me her truck to we could drive to Chemuyil for Pizza night. After eating we always take a walk around town to see what is going on. On our walk I spotted some action at the end of one of the streets.  Off we went to check it out.   It turned out to be a state sponsored recycling program.

People were lined up for blocks with all kinds of trash.

At the end of the line they were weighing the different kinds of trash with fish scales hung from a basketball hoop.

This is really a great program that teaches the people, and especially the children that everything has value and it is better to recycle and not dump your trash along the Mexican roads or dumps.

We decided that we should also be recycling in our campground and are now going to try to bring in all our Aluminum cans to give to some kid in town the next time to go to Chemuyil.

Two of the Sprinters left on Saturday and by Sunday morning they all were gone. I think their next destination is Belize, then Guatemala, however they alter their plans as they go along. Sunday afternoon Doug & Marsha showed up again to stay for one more night, they had driven back to Puerto Morelos to pick up a repaired surfboard.  They are trying to contact their friends to get back together tomorrow. Plans for them the STT group seems to be to camp at Paella Fish Camp south of Tulum for another week.

Monday Morning does not seem as windy, so hopefully the big WIDE beaches will return. The water has been coming all the way up to our Jon & Peg coral display. It washed it out a couple of days in a row.

 

Thing have been quiet here all week, We got to go out on Friday night to Pizza Leos with Paul & Helen.

All the campers are behind a line of trees and behind a fence separating us from the beach. Most of the beach walkers never even notice that we are back here. We get a nice beach view out our front window and a good breeze by the camper.

It’s a short walk to carry my kayak out to the surf, I can take either a long paddle to Puerto Adventuras or visit the two cenotes along the way. When the waves are high it’s a lot of work. When the wind is a little less I can do a little surfing. if the waves are right. But you have to watch where the waves are breaking.

We have not had any rain for weeks but after the high winds died it suddenly turned cooler.

They just left yesterday for Akumal where they will stay with Brenda’s sister for a few weeks and then start traveling around the rest of Mexico until they return to Canada. Links to both their blogs also appear on the left side of my blog and if they write anything new it moves up the list.

Every night most of the campers stop over our patio for Happy Hour. Sometimes it extends almost to 2 hours. But it’s fun to get together to see what anybody did that day or what they are going to do tomorrow.

There are a few regulars missing Paul Tempesta, Carol & Richard, and of course I took the picture. Helen invited Peggy to go with her to Playa and do some grocery shopping on Monday.

On Monday morning the winds had died and there were very few waves so since Peggy is going shopping I decided to take a long kayak paddle with my short whitewater boat. I paddled all the way south to just outside of Akumal near the Yal-Ku Lagoon.  It took almost 1-1/2 hours and the wind was picking up and the waves were building, so instead of paddling into the Lagoon I started right back to Xpu-Ha.
