We picked up our new RV on May 15th. We had a lot of changes made to the standard model. When we got it home I installed the 2 large solar arrays, the canoe/kayak rack & a DVD player.

Michigan Canoe Trip & New RV Shakedown

I enjoy all kinds of paddling and enjoy scenic areas, clean water and small numbers of other boaters. Peggy & I just upgraded our motor home to a new model. We bought it directly from the factory in Elkhart, IN about a month ago. I had them do a lot of customized modifications and installed a solar charging system and roof racks for my canoe and/or kayaks. We primarily use the RV in Mexico every winter and really don’t use it in the summer. But we did not want to get far from the factory on our shakedown cruise so we decided to head to Michigan for a week.

At first Peggy was not too keen on going canoeing. The last time she was in a canoe was in Florida – 2008 the last time we canoed in Michigan was Michigan – 1997. I read my report from 1997 and thought that sounded great maybe we should repeat that trip. We decided to go up in mid-week to avoid the weekend crowds, since the area around the Pine River is very popular like the Mohican River in Ohio. We picked Silver Creek State Forest Campground which has campsites right along the river. It has great access for put-in or take-out for two upper sections of the Pine River.

The camp is within easy driving distance to two other rivers in the Manistee National Forest; The Pere Marquette and the Little Manistee. We paddled those rivers in 1997 but this year never got around to it. When we got to the campground on Tuesday afternoon there was only one other camper there but almost filled all 19 RV sites on the weekend.

When we camp on the beach in Xpu Ha, Mexico there is a German couple, Vera and Dierck that stay there all year long and help run the campground. Last year was their first summer in the Yucatan and they found out that it was too hot. So this year they decided to tour the USA and Canada for 5 months. It just so happens that they were in the area and we asked them if they wanted to camp in a forest instead of private campgrounds. They loved it, in fact when we left they were still there enjoying the heavily wooded campsites and the $13/night cost.

The weekend campers are almost all Recreational Kayakers and a few Sit-On-Tops. We only saw one other canoe. The river in this area is only about 15’ wide and has a very fast current. There are small rocks and class I-II rapids and are really fun in any kind of watercraft. It is also a popular trout fishing stream. The biggest danger to paddlers are the fallen trees, which are everywhere.

We decided to start at Meadow-Brook Bridge and take-out at our campsite. We drove the RV to the put-in which had enough room for a few cars. My intention was to bike back from camp after the run but Dierck gave me a ride back to the put-in. In fact they were both waiting for us at camp and took this Video. We saw 7 deer and a few Mergansers on this stretch. There were two places where we had to lift around fallen trees. It is an 8 mi section that took us about 3 hours at a relaxing pace. Since it was a Wednesday we saw no other paddlers. In fact even on the weekend this section gets very little use. The most popular section of the Pine River is near Peterson Bridge National Forest Campground. On Friday Peggy said she was tired of paddling and wanted to hike. There is a nice 2 mile trail from the campground downstream to Lincoln Bridge and you can return on the opposite side of the river. It was starting to get pretty hot out but it was a nice 2 hour hike. We did take the wrong trail several times on the way back as it is not as well marked on this side of the river. We saw several Recreational Kayaks paddling this section. We warned them about the log jam. There is a nice bridge right across from our campsite to get you back on the right side of the river. Fifteen years ago I mountain biked this trail and found out this bridge was missing. It took me a long detour to find my way back to the camp.

We finally just hung around camp on Saturday and watched all the others paddlers go by. For all you flat-water recreational paddlers, these MI Rivers will provide you a great paddling experience.

We left early on Sunday morning to go to the Gilmore Car Museum near Kalamazoo. It was way better than I imagined with over 300 beautifully restored cars in 6 different buildings. I even found a ’52 Chevy that was nearly identical to my first car when I was in High School and College.

On Monday morning we were at the Phoenix RV factory in Elkhart for a few minor adjustments to our new RV and we got home in the early afternoon.

2012-2013 Trip Planning

We bought a new Phoenix Cruiser RV for this year’s trip. We had two large Solar Panels (280W) installed on the front of the roof and our kayak rack and TV antenna mounted closer to the back so that we don’t get shadows on the solar arrays.

We also had 2 – 6V Trojan golf cart batteries installed to give us plenty of deep cycle capacity. These combined with an 1800W inverter will give us 110v power to watch TV and use our laptop at night. We included a system which keeps track of your batteries state of charge.

Power at RV parks in Mexico is always a problem. Even though some may have 30 amp outlets you will seldom find more that 10-15 amps available to your rig. On Our Way

It was a rough week. Luckily we brought our new motor home early to pack for our Mexico trip. Super Storm Sandy hit the East coast of the USA on Monday morning. The storm was so large that all the way in Ohio the outer bands hit us hard. It had been raining hard for a few days and on Monday night the 70 mph winds hit the North coast communities. Trees were down everywhere and the power failed around 9 PM. Our power company had sent most of its trucks & crews to the east coast to help them out. Not realizing that our area would be hit hard. There was not enough help to remove trees that had fallen on the power lines. Crews from the far West USA were sent in. Of course it took them 3-4 days to arrive. We had no power, people’s basements were flooding, no sump pumps, food was spoiling in the refrigerators and no political commercials to watch on the blackened TV’s. That’s a good thing.

We had better luck, we had our RV home with a 4 KW generator and deep cycle batteries to run a inverter at night, so I didn’t need to run the generator. We hooked up the power with heavy long extension cords to our sump pump, refrigerator and one TV and a few lamps. When we needed to cook using the microwave we just stepped out to the RV microwave and used it. However it was obvious we wouldn’t be able to leave for our trip until the power came back on. We were also going to cancel our early Thanksgiving dinner that Peggy prepares before we leave for the Winter. 18 family members were expected.

RV Factory Repair

We pulled our RV into the Phoenix factory at 6 AM. The problem was a leaking rubber seal on the side-out which contains our refrigerator and dinette.

This is what the inside of our RV looked like at 6 AM.

One hour later the dinette was removed.

Then they removed the refrigerator.

The adhesive on the big rubber seal adhesive had failed and come loose from the rubber seal, not from the slide-out floor.

They had to remove the slide-out to put the new seal in. Of course rather than just rely on the adhesive to hold they actually screwed down the new seal.

In their spare time they put in a new emergency exit window since when we tried to demo it, the window seal did not comeback together properly. They didn’t know why, so they just installed a new window.

They completed everything and had us back together by 11 AM, a 5 hour job. Good days drive to the Rio Micos

Since we had all our paper work done (FMM & TIP) we could use the easy crossing at Los Indios. On Sunday you are allowed to cross here but you can’t get Visas or Vehicle Permits It is also open to return to the USA on Sunday but you can’t turn your permits back in, which is required when leaving MX for the year. They now use computers to keep track that you paid for your FMM and have returned it before the 6 month limit.
We got going early and crossed the border at 6:15AM. When we tried to reactivate our Telcel Banda Ancha to give us internet access in MX at a OXXO convenience store it didn’t work. It is possible that the number gets cancelled after 6 months of non-use. We got pesos OK from a ATM and tried the recharga at another store in case the first store did something wrong, no luck.
