80 Pirate Paddle - Upper Yough - 5/28,29 (Sun & Mon)

Postby keelhauler » Sun May 21, 2017 9:52 pm

The trip is on Memorial Day weekend, the scheduled releases are on Sunday and Monday and depending on the water level I hope all my friends can join me on the river to celebrate my first time, since turning 80, that I will paddle the Upper Yough.
There is no release on Friday or Saturday. But if there is water somewhere else on Friday, I would like to paddle with you.

Eye Patches will be distributed to all that want to join in the celebration; we will break up into smaller groups through the rapids.

Free camping available at our cabin at 377 Beaver Creek Dr for the weekend. Call or text me at 440-554-1383 if you can make it.

Right now it looks like the level should be no higher than 2.2' and air temperature near 80.

We just got to the cabin. Watching rainfall.
As it is now I think the Cheat Canyon will probably be paddleable on Friday, if anyone is interested let me know.

If we get too much rain the UY will be good for those who like high flows but not me for my first run.

Looking at levels on Saturday morning and the weather forecast, I think the water level will be about 2.4' or 1050 CFS.
I don't feel confident paddling at that level for first trip but we will have a trip. There are lots of Keel-Haulers that like that level.
So when I make my final decision, I can give you a contact that will organize the trip.

Usually with 10am release paddlers start to paddle at Sang Run at about 11:30 to 12 noon. So you can drop boat off before 11AM and go to take-out to shuttled driver back at 11:15. If you are running a little later, drive to take-out and be prepared to carry some paddlers back to put-in. Someone will shuttle drivers back to put-in at end of trip.

6AM Sunday - Water Levels read

Lower Big Sandy at 5.8' is best levels, if coming contact me. 440-554-1383

Tygart is at minimum but OK, Phil & Jen on Arden section

Dry Fork is 1200 cfs, Jeff Macklin there

Top Yough 375 cfs', Hoyes is 675 cfs - FIFO's there and UY will be Full release = 2.6' too high for me. FIFO's
If paddle before 10AM UY would be summer level at start but flow will catch you at Meat Cleaver.

Lower Yough - 3.25' Bud Chavez

Cheat is good at 3.3' at noon

We ended up with 10 paddlers on Lower Big Sandy on Sunday. 72o and sunny, great day.

I was looking to paddle UY on Monday at 10AM to avoid the release but everyone is going home.
